THIS LITTLE PIGGY ….

…..Went to Wiggies, which is a new (ish) principally pork led pop up that has taken up residency at The Rising Sun Pub in Blackfriars.

SMALL BUT WELL CONSIDERED MENU

SMALL BUT WELL CONSIDERED MENU

Wiggies offers diners a light, intimate and relaxed setting on the first floor of The Rising Sun pub, previously the home of Carl Clarkson’s Disco Bistro. These days the menu looks a little different, with a clear direction that aims to enlighten patrons to the diversity of dishes, cuts and combinations that pork can offer. We certainly were satisfyingly surprised at the approachability of the porky based menu that displays some creative culinary combinations.

To start we shared a light Confit of Trout Salad with (sometimes) Crispy Pigs Ears, then feasted on beautifully cooked Scallops with Black Pudding and Pork Fillet with a Carrot Puree.

Wiggies has an air of personal passion. The service is friendly and attentive, the menu imaginative and approachable with tantalising dishes that will have you finding it hard pressed to choose.  Wiggies like to use all of the cuts, there is a ‘no waste’ strategy – Nose to tail, no gimmicks.

We ate, drank and met the rather charming Lucy Hambro. Lucy is Wiggies’ creator; with the help of her team they offer a menu that is British and seasonal. This is a girl who grew up on farm and values the quality of life that animals enjoy prior to the plate.  She personally visits the Norfolk farm where these little porkers are reared and dispatched. There is an admirable sense of responsibility.

Overall: The dishes we encountered were agreeably light (even more appreciated with this recent heat wave we have been having).  Summery and seasonal produce lift the dishes from what could potentially be heavier more traditional pork offerings. There is a modern approach to the plates and guests are enticed into trying unique and exciting taste combos.

OK, SO THE FOOD ISN'T GIMMICKY BUT WE DO LIKE THE SENSE OF HUMOUR - 'S'WINE LIST' AND INDEED THE FINELY NAMED 'PIG MAC' A BIG SELLER

ONE OF OUR TOP DISHED OF THIS SUMMER - SCALLOPS AND BLACK PUDDING

Entertaining: Super location for the city folk and the Clerkenwell creatives. Take your client, have your lunch meeting, sip on a glass of rose from the ‘s’wine list’ and chomp on one of their (top seller) pork burgers.

What we think: We love what Wiggies stands for, although some might be put off by the porkalicious menu, those that go with an open mind, we think will be pleasantly surprised.

Wiggies/ The Rising Sun, 61 Carter Lane, EC4V 5DY/ Tel: 07850 630 129

Monday to Friday: Open for a £12 two course set menu from 12pm-3pm and A la Carte dinner from 6pm-10pm.

We reckon a decent dinner would be around £30-40 pp inc drinks.

Take away available and bar menu is served in the pub below.

We were guests at Wiggies – thank you to Lucy Hambro for your hospitality.
