‘Whoooooo aaaaare yoooooou’ said the Caterpillar. This moment from Alice in Wonderland is where my mind wafted to, as we puffed away on a Shisha in the abstract land of flash cars and sharp suits that is Mayfair.
Mayfair is somewhere not to be underestimated, even with East London having a right old time of it and opening up a whole host of alternative entertaining options, Mayfair (maybe an unrealistic reflection of London in general) is without a doubt still an area many of our clients ask to hosts events in; where launches are often planned, where aspirational client entertaining occurs and home to a few of our fave destinations in London e.g. Claridge’s, Cecconi’s and Annabel’s.
Recently we accepted an invitation to the newly opened Mamounia Lounge on Curzon Street, in the heart of Mayfair. The restaurant and bar venue has 2 floors with an Arabian look and feel, offering Middle Eastern cuisine. Unfortunately when we went very early on in the week it was very quiet so we didn’t really feel any atmosphere, however food was very authentic with lovely lemony hummus for much pitta dunking and epically portioned tagines to feast on….but what we really loved…. was the Shisha!
Post dinner, sitting on a very heated terrace (thank goodness) outside the restaurant, with little blankets, sitting shoulder to shoulder with a host of other partakers, we eye-inhaled the Shisha menu! A whole booklet dedicated to flavours and various set ups – you can it seems suck hot flavoured tobacco through booze – excellent. We’ll be back to try that one. We did try a Pineapple Shisha, which was more fun than we’d expected. There is a lovely relaxing quality to the ritual of setting up, lighting and smoking of the Shisha. It is quite an enjoyable alternative to the often cheeky smoke (even though you don’t smoke anymore – honest) after a meal or drink/s. There is something rather soothing and hypnotic about the slow puffing of the pipe and the sound of the bubbling liquid. I did very much feel like I should have been lounging around in various positions a la Alice in Wonderland’s Caterpillar character…. Maybe best to be done in private.
Our Pineapple Shisha was delightfully sweet, über Kitsch and a nice alternative to poncing a fag from someone at the end of the night, although considerably more expensive. It is far more decadent, luxurious and highly entertaining… When in Mayfair my darling!
